History progression
To help children place knowledge in the learning sequence we often provide them with knowledge organisers as a reference in lessons. Here are some examples:
Autumn: Year 1/2 Year 3/4 Year 5/6
Spring: Year 1/2 Year 3/4 Year 5/6
Summer: Year 1/2 Year 3/4 Year 5/6
Recently, we held a whole school Victorian day to celebrate Harrowbarrow School’s 150th birthday. All of the children and staff dressed up in Victorian costumes as we took a journey back in time to experience what our school would have been like 150 years ago, when it opened in 1872.
With their Victorian costumes on, the children walked to All Saints Church where they were joined by Rev Chris Painter, who helped recreate the very first day of Harrowbarrow School in 1872. Through role play, the children learnt about Victorian lessons and corporal punishment as detailed in our school records.
What have we been learning in History?
Please see below some photos and examples of our work this year in History.
Year 1/2
The children in year 1 and year 2 were learning all about Transport linked to their Weather and Seasons topic in the Autumn term. They found out the different ways in which travel and transport has changed from past to present, ordered these chronologically and wrote some information. The children found out about an early form of transport, looking at Viking longboats.
In the spring term in Year 1 and 2, the children learned all about ‘The Great Fire of London’. We have been looking at how life has changed since 1666, comparing the past to our lives now. They have been learning about how the roles of firefighters have changed over the years.
